STYLIST AT BRUNCH

It’s no secret that I’m in love with the beauty industry, so when Dominique Mitchell (DOMOTHEHAIRDEVO) invited me to his event last Sunday, I was excited to go. Plus I have a special project planned for industry professionals in the near future so this event was a perfect networking opportunity for me. It was great to be able to see Kansas City Beauty Professionals come together ready to receive knowledge vs being in competition with one another. What’s fabulous is the fact that there is more than enough opportunities for success to go around. I say this all of the time, sometimes it just takes a shoulder to lean on and learn on so that we may all be success. Stylist at Brunch was proof of just how beautiful we are when we all come together ready to receive.

The event took place at The Promise Event Space and it was set up beautifully. Dominique definitely did not skip out on any details; from the table setup, brunch buffet, the majestic over-sized French style panelist chairs and paparazzi style photo ops-everything and everyone looked absolutely amazing. He even rolled out the red carpet. One thing that I can say about Kansas City it that we sure know how to throw beautiful events. The panelist included to everyone’s favorite Philanthropist Barber – Joseph C. Thomas (Joey Cuts, 180V), Tax Expert and Speaker – Marquita Miller, Celebrity Stylist – Aisha Olgetree, Pink Lipps Creator – Kenyatta Gant and was moderated by Salon Owner – Toni Vaughn.

Although this event was for industry professionals – Beauticians, Barbers, MUA’s and Nail Techs, the transparency of the messages reached far beyond and ministered to everyone. I will share some nuggets the I picked up from the event.

Marquita Miller:

As a tax accountant Marquita is a unique and valuable asset to all business owners. She certainly utilizes her business knowledge help Kansas City entrepreneurs elevate their business model. The title of her message was “Business Beyond the Chair”.

You’re more than your skillset. See how you are able to maximize your talents and title so that more doors may open for you.

Skill will qualify you but they (clients, customers) will stay with you because of the value that you bring.

Create a premium brand. This adds value to your service offerings and affords you the opportunity to charge what you are worth and have more negotiating skills.

Some people are not the best at what they do; but they are only the hard workers.

Ride my gifts and my talents until the wheels fall off so that I can live my best life. This message was so on point. I see so many gifts become obsolete because people will not simply take advantage of them while they are relevant.

Busy and broke don’t go together! OMG – She could have just said that and I would have been good for the rest of the day. I see this all of the time, people offering to do things for free just to get in good with a prospect. Folk not properly managing their time. No work life balance while being adequately compensated for their talents. It is ok to give back and donate time every once in a while. In fact, I recommend that you allocate at least 48 hours of your life a year towards mentoring or community service. But you will not get anywhere offering services for free that others are profiting from and not having any time to do things that will help you to build wealth.

Do you know your value?

Are you being paid for your value?

Your gift will make room for you. This is a great point. When we are true to our talents everything else will fall in place.

Ownership is everything. When you own something can’t no body tell you to go.

There needs to be 5 ways to people can pay you. Yes, YES! This is my second favorite Marquita message and I couldn’t agree more. I always talk about having multiple streams of revenue. I have always practiced this am working on elevating this practice to the max.

Kenyatta Gant

Kenyatta is the owner of Pink Lipps a popular Kansas City makeup line. She is also the owner of a new makeup studio. Her message was about “Letting Faith Lead You”. She talked about allowing faith to push you in the right direction. She took the very scary road from employee to entrepreneur just a few months ago and her story proves that sometime you don’t have all of the answers but you will be pushed in the right direction anyway. Your dreams will make room for you!

Aisha Olgletree

Celebrity Stylist, Salon Owner, Exceptional Extension Expert and overall sweetie pie – Aisha Ogletree taught us how even when all odds are against you, you can still WIN. From teenage mother to owning one of the most popular salons in KC; Aisha had just about every curve ball that you could think of thrown at her and she pulled through.  There really could not be a more deserving person. I am very proud of her success. Yes, Aisha has a story to tell and I can’t wait to work more with her in the future. Beyond her emotionally compelling story of overcoming obstacles, two messages that really stuck out were:

Find a person doing what you want to do and attach yourself to them.

Treat people well because you never know who you will need.

Joseph Thomas

Award winning, Barber Salon Owner, Philanthropist. Everyone knows and loves Joey. He has a huge heart that shines through his continual giving back to our community. Like a true rebel Joey switched his original message of “Leadership within Teamwork” to “On Your Mark,Get Set, GO!” Here are some bullets from his message.

Success is a marathon, not a sprint.

Get into position. You have to believe in where you want to be. Change your mindset and get into position.

Go all in. Keep your end goal in front of you. Place yourself in the zone of expectancy. Have a vision.

Press go at full throttle “Sonic Speed”. Run towards your dream.

Joeys final message was more of a challenge…I dare you to outwork me!

The evening concluded with a Q & A. I sure hope that  Stylist at Brunch turns into an annual event. Everyone left the event motivated, inspired and empowered.

Thanks for the comprehensive coverage of this amazing event. I know several people who were in attendance and they all gave rave reviews. I have to stop being such a hermit and get out to some of these engaging events.
