BUDGET FRIENDLY CLOSET UPGRADE

No more plastic hangers! I finally ditched the plastic and upgraded to wood hangers. I also got my tiny downgraded walk-in closet organized and I am very pleased with the outcome. Check out how my Budget Friendly Closet Upgrade that is apartment/rental friendly too.

I have been toying with the idea of having a capsule wardrobe and this is a great concept that I will possibly visit later.  I’ll revisit the capsule wardrobe once I reach my goal weight and have fun with the clothes that I have left. I have however reduced my clothes by more than 50% and I will continuously get rid of things that I am just not gonna wear.

My messy closet before I slayed/styled it. I got rid of a bunch of clothes before I moved into this home and also a lot of things that were stored in bins and my dresser.

NO MORE PLASTIC HANGERS!

NO MORE PLASTIC HANGERS!

My closet was somewhat in order minus the blob of shoes and other miscellaneous items on the floor. Plus the 2 storage totes and laundry basket not pictured that were stored to the other side of the closet. Ok, not my closet was actually a hot mess. I definitely waited too long to get in in order.

When organizing always start with this rule: KEEP, TOSS & DONATE. It’s very simple. The stuff that does not fit, that is outdated, no longer your style or things that you will simply never wear again – do not hang on to it; donate it or put it in a garage sale. If the items are worn out or stained – please throw them in the trash. Last, your fabulous items that you do wear – KEEP THEM. Also, remove all items that do not belong in your closet and find another home for them. Try to reserve your closet for only the things that your wear.

To make your life easier and your closet prettier, arrange your clothing items by type, then by color. This will make getting dressed easier and you will avoid buying 11 magenta tops. I have always done this and redo it about once a year if things get out of order. If you decide to purchase new hangers count the items that you wish to hang so that you know how many are needed. I highly recommend that all of your hangers match. This makes your closet look nice and uniform. I ended up purchasing 120 regular (suit) wooden hangers and 9 pant/skirt hangers from Wal-Mart; 20 suit hangers for about 10 bucks is really a steal. I may purchase a few pant hangers but will not purchase any more regular hangers. As I reduce my wardrobe I will use the extra hangers to convert my kid’s closets. For now, I will practice the one in one out method. To maximize space, I do not hang items like t-shirts, tank tops, leggings, or workout clothes. Those items are neatly folded and put in t-shit storage boxes or my dresser. The few sweaters that I decided to keep are also tucked away in linen sweater boxes. All of my containers/boxes are from The Container Store. Lastly, I do not store seasonal items like coats or jackets in this closet.

Once all of the clothes were in order I was able to focus on the shoes that really did not have a place to live in my closet. As you know I purchased a shelf from IKEA to display some of my shoes a few months ago. I absolutely love the LACK shelving unit, it was easy to put together and showcases my shoes beautifully but I needed more space so I picked up two shoe cubes from The Container Store along, plastic shoe and boot boxes.

OMG, this was just what I needed. I have been unhappy with my closet since the day that I moved in but now my closet has some curb appeal. I love the different textures that the linen, plastic, wood and whatever material my shoes shelves are made of. What an accomplishment and budget friendly too. This entire project only cost me about $300 including the previously purchased shelf from IKEA. Best of all everything is apartment friendly and can be used anywhere that I may live.

I still have to figure out storage for my handbags. Right now they are simi-tucked away on a shelf between the first and second levels of my handed items. I love my IKEA LACK wall unit even if it is taking away two feet of my closet space.
